Yah NG looks nice since the update but it takes some time to figure it out but i am sure you will be fine ^^
and that's awesome you have time enough to work on your projects as well as on projects here. mabey you can look at some forums on here. they are always looking for artists ^^ just an idea. anyway good luck with making your portfolio ^^
